The Malignant Ginger

I'm Jojogingerhead, a 31 year old artist & musician based in Brighton (UK) satirically documenting the highs and lows of my secondary triple negative breast cancer diagnosis. Trying to see the light in a dark and scary situation without using the words fight, battle, journey or survivor.

Stick it on (my chemo playlist)!

For some strange reason I ended up choosing a song for each chemo session that I attended, I still can’t really fathom why. Maybe because music has been such a massive part of my life. So here is my chemo playlist…

Session 1 – Um Bongo song

Because I was accompanied by my dear mum to my first ever chemotherapy session and for some strange ridiculous reason I had the song from the Um Bongo drink advert stuck in my head.

Session 2 – Poison by Alice Cooper

Because I was accompanied by my oldest friend Sarah and firstly, the lyrics are rather fitting to the chemotherapy process but secondly, and more importantly, we used to head bang to this when we were aged 15 in our local rock club wearing our actual real school uniforms (there are photos somewhere)…

Session 3 – Under the Sea from the Little Mermaid soundtrack

Because I was accompanied by my dear friend Lucy Porter and we’re both ginger just like Arial but hopefully without the crabs.

Session 4 – Jump Around by House of Pain

Because I was accompanied by my wonderful friend and house mate Denisa and I felt like a house of pain. Jumping around was the last thing I possibly felt like doing after a night of steroid induced insomnia and being serenaded by our student neighbours (badly) playing guitar outside my bedroom window till 2am.

Session 5 – The Frog Chorus by Paul McCartney

Because I was accomanped by my amazing friend Kate, Mummy Bum Egg herself and once I recorded her singing a legendary version of the very same song.

Session 6 – After The Gold Rush by Neil Young

Because I was accompanied to my final chemo by my mum and this is a very nostalgic song for me with poignant lyrics, once covered by my parents and for some reason has been stuck in my head for the last few sleepless nights (thank you steroids).
