The Malignant Ginger

After reading a lot of articles and research whilst being bed bound on chemo, one of my goals is to become a lot more conscious of the environment and use natural products where I can, one of these being deodorant. There have been many stories in the media that link parabens and chemicals found in some deodorants to breast cancer, although as far as I know, there is no conclusive scientific research (please correct me if I am wrong). Out of everything I have read, I found this article on the matter most useful, I would be very interested to see anything published more recently.

Anyhow, I thought it can’t do any harm to have a go at making my own deodorant, it will give me something to do (I love making stuff) and it is very cost effective as you only need a pea sized amount for each armpit. I have been wearing it for a week now and am pleased to say that I smell fresh as a daisy. I have named my handmade deodorant HIPPYSTINK, see below for instructions on how to make it! I think my new found motto is going to be: if I can’t eat it then I’m not rubbing it on my body.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons of raw coconut oil (I like to use Biona)
  • 3 tablespoons of baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons of pure unrefined shea butter (I like to use Laughing Bird)
  • 2 tablespoons of arrowroot powder
  • optional essential oil of your choice (I like to use tea tree oil and patchuli)

Method

Boil a pan of water on stove and place a bowl or jug inside. Heat the coconut oil and shea butter in the bowl till it melts together then add in the powders and essential oils. Pour into a screw top container and leave to cool.

Next on the list is to try and make body moisturiser, I will be posting the results on here shortly. Smell you laterz!

I’ve been using mine a few days now and so far on really impressed. I certainly think I’ll be choking up my own batch very soon. Thanks again jojo x

So glad you’re impressed! I will never go back to deodorant again! Next time I think I might add some Lavender essential oil…

Is it soft do you just scoop some out of the jar and use it?

Hi Helen, you just scoop a little out on your finger, a pea sized amount and rub it into armpit like a cream!

Hi Nicole, did you mean how long does each application of deodorant last for? I only put it on once a day in the morning and it lasts all day, I don’t sweat a lot though, although that may change after starting Tamoxifen!

Ah no, I meant how long does a batch last – does it have a use by period? Also, how/where do you store it?

I just store it in a reused jam jar, doesn’t need to go in fridge or anything. Coconut oil lasts for ages but the shea butter had a best before November 2015 label on it so I would say it lasts at least a year 🙂

Interesting! I do worry a little about chemicals in deodorants. How long does this last?
